Vacances de la Toussaint; A National public holiday

La Toussaint is one of the most respected national public holidays observed in France. November 1st is All Saints’ Day, in which the saints recognised by the Roman Catholic Church are honoured. Although it is a Christian tradition, the roots of the observance can be traced back to the Celtic feast of Samhain, an occasion marking the onset of the winter period. November 2nd is All Souls’ Day, when those who have passed on are remembered and honoured. Although they may sound sombre, these days are actually very inspiring and uplifting. Families gather together and spend time strengthening their ties and savouring one another’s company. Chrysanthemums are an important symbol at this time and cemeteries are decked in flowers, candles and other tributes.

A visit to the beautiful cemeteries of Paris is an enriching experience during Vacances de la Toussaint. Père-Lachaise cemetery is the largest in the city at 44 hectares, and the most visited in the world. Moliere, Frederic Chopin, Oscar Wilde and Jim Morrison are amongst those interred here.

Take advantage of our special Vacances de la Toussaint offer and see what Paris has to show you during this special time. One item of particular interest is the Salon du Chocolat.
